Congratulations and Happy Summer!

Congratulations students for another successful school year!

Third and fourth graders, I look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Fifth graders, it has been my pleasure to work with you this year and for some of you, the past years as well!

I will keep the Blogger and Google Classrooms open through the summer so we can stay in touch!

Enjoy you summer!

Straw Bridges

This week's STEM challenge involved researching types of bridges and factors that can cause bridge dangers. Students built bridges with 20 straws and scotch tape that would cover a 10 inch gap. They were allowed to use rulers and scissors. We tested with weights to see how much weight each bridge could hold. It was surprising to see how much weight structures made of straws can hold!

College Pennant Presentations

I have been so pleased with the presentations of College Pennants so far! The kids have learned a lot about the process and so much new vocabulary!  Their question/answer sessions at the end of each presentation have been very engaging!  Please check the schedule to see when your child is scheduled to present! I'll add pictures as there are more presentations!

Advanced Learning Plans (ALP)

In an effort to better align ALP goals with the school year calendar and transition the document towards an ongoing process, the GATE department is making some changes. Before the end of the school year, current year's goals will be evaluated and notes will be added to a new ALP summarizing each student's strengths and challenges from the 2016-17 school year. Once fall 2017 iReady and 2017 PARCC results are in, students will work with their teachers to develop goals for the 2017-18 school year.

This year's teachers have already provided feedback to the GATE department for the 2016-17 school year and I am in the process of adding that to the new ALPs. Attached is a Google Form to obtain parent feedback. Please complete and submit at your earliest convenience.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Aluminum Boats

The kids researched the Sewol boat accident and then had to build a boat that would carry cargo out of aluminum foil.

Congratulations to Jonas and Ivan! Their boats each held 38 marbles!
